Decanter Magazine's High Street Choice

Decanter Magazine is our very favorite wine magazine. It has in-depth, analytical articles about all things pertaining to wine. Do any of you read it? It's no coincidence the magazine originates in Great Britain -- not because it's Kevin's birth place, but rather because it's home to the world's greatest and most scholarly wine education program, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.

The reason we bring this subject up is because we're pretty excited Decanter just posted a MAJOR rave-up review of one of our most unusual white wines. It's been selected as their pick for "Weekday Wine Recommendations" as well as their lofty "High Street Choice."

We first tasted this wine in a private wine tasting meeting with the difficult-to-pin-down, elite buyer for a major wholesaler. We were taken by surprise when we tasted this white wine, mostly because Gewurztraminer isn't really our thing (nor is Torrontes, for that matter; both are far too intensely floral in general for our tastes).

Then this happened.

"This land has been in the hands of the Cluver family since 1896 and Gewurztraminer has a considerable presence, accounting for more than 10% of total plantings. Elgin has a relatively cool climate, and this is a subtle, inviting take on the grape, with tones of rosewater, lychee and spice, boosted by an invigorating kick of acidity".

Decanter Magazine: "High Street Choice"

"Sexy rose petal and cinnamon spice on the varietally accurate nose. Supple, soft and moderately sweet (10 g/l r.s.), but with enough acidity to give shape and lift to the flavors of white peach, flowers and gingery spice. An easygoing fruit salad of a wine, perked up by a bit of unabsorbed CO2." (Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Media)

This dry white wine is excellent with seafood and shellfish. We suggest you pour it for family and friends and let them guess what's in the glass. The bright acidity along with the exotic nose and palate will most likely throw off all but the most seasoned wine tasters!
