Branching Out

Today we would like for you to consider branching out of your normal wine routine. After all, it's super easy to fall into a habitual pattern when drinking wine, reaching for that same Nerello Mascalese over and over again because it's just so darned tasty.

Over the years we've conditioned ourselves to drink new grape varieties on a regular basis. While we have a clear penchant for drinking Old World wines, every now and then we break out of the box and grab a New World wine.

Like right now. We have just the ticket for cold weather boredom.

An alluring and seductive Australian from Torbreck.

If you haven't heard of this winery you might want to make a note. Torbreck crafts powerhouse red wines with insane press scores (including one we carry which was awarded 98 points from the Wine Advocate!).

Today's wine is a bit more reasonable on the wallet than the 98 point powerhouse, but nearly just as tasty as its big brother.

Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles 2011 Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles 2011

"Torbreck's 2011 Cuvee Juveniles presents a medium garnet-purple color and vibrant aromas of raspberry preserves, kirsch, black and white pepper and smoked bacon with just a hint of damp loam. Full-bodied with plenty of juicy red berry preserve flavors, it has a medium level of silky tannins, refreshing acid acidity and a long peppery finish. Delicious now, it should keep to 2016+." (Wine Advocate)

Wine Advocate: 90 points

"Smooth and vibrant, with spicy clove and green olive overtones around a dark core of dried blueberry and allspice, lingering on the generous, expressive finish. Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz. Drink now through 2018. 1,500 cases imported." (Wine Spectator)

Wine Spectator: 91 points

Wine Spectator: Smart Buys

"Highly fragrant aromas of peppery cherry and dark berries, with a subtle floral nuance in the background. I'd have guessed that there was a lot more shiraz in here, a whole lot more in fact. Spicy and light on its feet, offering gently sweet blackberry and cherry compote flavors and a hint of allspice. Finishes with emphatic spiciness and very good focus, with no obvious tannins and a lingering, palate-numbing note of black pepper." (Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar)

International Wine Cellar: 90 points
