An Elegant White and Red for Autumn Dining
(Plus One Silly Little Value)

Today we have an elegant white and a red for your drinking pleasure. Now that Autumn is upon us and left turns are now an option, it's time to crank up the stove and start cooking heartier fare which warms both the heart and the home.

Thomas Labaille Les Monts Damnés Sancerre Chavignol 2011

Thomas Labaille Les Monts Damnés Sancerre Chavignol 2011

Les Monts Damnés is one of the most famous vineyard sites in all of Sancerre, located in the Loire Valley of France. While this region in general is renowned for its crisp, minerally Sauvignon Blancs, Les Monts Damnés is a steep, backbreaking mountain to farm (hence its name "damned mountain"). At harvest, each basket of grapes must be hand carried down the vineyard's steep paths. This extraordinary effort produces wines with remarkable concentration, purity and elegance.

This wine is perfect for Autumn salads with crisp apples, walnuts and goat cheese, or pan-seared sea scallops served with beurre blanc, or our weekly staple -- a lemon, garlic and herb roasted chicken.

"Evinces the smoky, fusil, chalky, iodine-like Kimmeridgian aspects as well as the succulent kiwi and grapefruit in spades, and with an extra measure of sheer juiciness and saliva-stimulating salinity that add to the persistence and next-sip inducement of the finish.

Lees-enhanced richness of texture offers something of a platform for showing off the vintage-atypical levity, animation, and minerality. It should prove profoundly delightful for at least half a dozen years, not to mention it is an excellent value." (Wine Advocate)

Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2009

Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2009

Isole e Olena's 2009 Chianti Classico recently arrived, bringing with it Paolo's de Marci's trademark of minimal intervention and a deft touch in the winery. This is a benchmark Chianti Classico, respected the world over. Isole e Olena is always one of our favorites, year after year. The prestigious British wine magazine Decanter awarded Isole e Olena the #1 ranked Chianti Classico in 2009!

"Great elegance and structure. Lovely ripe fruit and mineral flavors with silky tannins. Will gain complexity over the next few years. Gorgeous." (Decanter Magazine)

Decanter Magazine: #1 Ranked 2009 Chianti Classico

"80% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo, 5% Syrah. Mid ruby still youthful. Ever so slightly reductive and with lifted cherry fruit. Vibrant, compact and elegant with marzipan-like tannin. Fragrant and very young." (Jancis Robinson, Master of Wine; author of the Oxford Companion to Wine)

Jancis Robinson, MW: 17.5 out of 20 points

"The 2009 Chianti Classico is a gorgeous, racy wine laced with bright red cherries, flowers and herbs, all of which come together in the refined, medium-bodied style that is the house signature. The 2009 is vibrant, perfumed and impeccable in its overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019." (Wine Advocate)

Today's Silly Little Value

We don't mean for our "silly little value" to sound demeaning in any way. It's just that we never, ever imagined a wine selling for less than $6 after discount could be any good. Truth be told, this wine is quite quaffable in a simple, easy going and fun way. Who needs to be so serious all the time anyway?!?

Pizza night? Most definitely. Company over for dinner? You bet. Friday night after work, looking for a glass of wine to ease you into a relaxing weekend, rather than challenging you to bits and pieces? Yes, this is a good wine for all those reasons.

Vecchia Cantina Chianti 2011

"A solid red, offering a base of cherry accented by rhubarb and earth. Balanced and ready for drinking. Drink now through 2014. 16,500 cases made." (Wine Spectator)

Wine Spectator: 87 points

$6.99/bottle or just $67.10/12 pack case ($5.59/bottle)

For those of you who really like to party, we also have magnums available for $13.99/1.5 liter bottle!
