Glenelly Estate Reserve 2011 (South Africa: Stellenbosch) (ID# 2784)

Name Glenelly Estate Reserve 2011 (ID# 2784)
Varietal Red Blend
Region South Africa: Stellenbosch
Notes "Features alluring fresh espresso and smoldering juniper notes out front, followed by a rich, polished core of cassis and blackberry fruit, with a serious spine of licorice root and a long tarry edge to the finish. This still has ample grip, but there's enough development here to begin drinking now. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2020. 1,500 cases imported." (Wine Spectator)

Additional Notes

"Musky aromas of pepper, herbs, tobacco leaf and game convey a distinctly Old World lift, along with a positive rusticity. Dense, plush and deep but firm too, with concentrated redcurrant, plum and blackberry fruit flavors leavened by green herb nuances. This superb wine spreads out horizontally on the back end, which is very long but a tad warm today." (Stephen Tanzer, Vinous) "The 2011 Estate Reserve is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Syrah and 10% Merlot with 10% Petit Verdot, matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. It has a savory component on the nose that rather dominates the black fruit, hints of iodine and a vein of blue fruit originating from the Petit Verdot. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin on the entry, saturated black fruit laced with tobacco and cracked black pepper that gains more depth towards the sinewy finish. I am just seeking a little more harmony between the grape varieties here, more cohesion." (Wine Advocate)
