Top 100 Wine Of the Year: A Stunning Single Vineyard Sancerre

We have an absolutely STUNNING white wine on offer today. It's a single vineyard Sancerre which has been awarded a highly coveted TOP 100 WINES OF THE YEAR from Wine Enthusiast magazine, ranking at #57. Woah.

When we first evaluated this wine there was no press at all. We sampled it amongst many other Sancerre offerings yet we kept coming back to this one, completely mesmerized.

Not only is this a single vineyard Sancerre (!), but it's farmed biodynamically and the grapes are hand harvested. The Moussière vineyard lies on limestone-rich soil on an ancient rocky belt which forms part of the remarkable Kimmeridgian chain (upon which Chablis graces its vineyards).

Striking terroir + meticulous biodynamic farming + low yields = one of Sancerre's finest wines.

If you love purity, finesse and substance this is the wine for you. There is an elegance and energy in this wine which is completely unmistakable.

Half of it was raised in oak casks and the other half in traditional concrete vats before blending. The wine was aged on fine lees for nearly a year, giving this wine extraordinary texture and balance.

There is such care in the creation of this wine and it shows in every sip. Let's head on over to the press. We think you'll be impressed.

"In 2017, this flesh is shot through with ripe citrus, pear and nettle fruit notes, all balanced by pithy freshness and a long, saline finish. Stunning and far too impressive to be called an 'entry-level' wine. Vinified 50% in wooden cuvee, 50% in stainless steel.

This has quite brilliant aromatics brimming with the scents of limestone and flowers, rather like putting one's nose down to the very fragments of Kimmeridgian marl that litter this vineyard. The palate carries a similar mineral but also floral profile, with notes of orange citrus.

It is beautifully elegant, fresh and pure on the palate, polished and bright, an intertwining of limestone, citrus pith and floral notes. An impressive 'entry level' cuvée." 92-94 points, Chris Kissack, thewinedoctor.com

Alphonse Mellot La Moussière Sancerre 2017

Alphonse Mellot La Moussière Sancerre 2017

"This wine comes from Mellot's home domaine of La Moussière. It is young and intense, with a mix of spice, concentrated citrus and crisp acidity. The depth of flavor in this wine is extraordinary and merits aging." (Wine Enthusiast)

Cambria Katherine's Vineyard Chardonnay 2015

"The 2015 Chardonnay Katherine's Vineyard Signature Collection presents a richer expression of this site. Pineapple, passionfruit, mint, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes grace this super-expressive, creamy Chardonnay from Cambria." (Antonio Galloni, Vinous)

Vinous: 92 points

Cambria Julia's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

"The 2015 Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard Signature Collection is a dense, powerful wine built on textural depth and structure. The 2015 is going to need a few years to come into its own, but it has good potential. Dark stone fruit, lavender, spice and formidable tannins add to the wine's virile feel." (Antonio Galloni, Vinous) Drink 2020-2027.

La Spinetta Vermentino 2018

"Aromas of pear, pungent flowers and a touch of herbacity nuanced and wonderfully focused, with the energy of Vermentino driving the wine's personality, citrus, orchard fruit and floral notes are nicely delineated in this attractive, inviting white." (Winemaker's Notes) This is a BEAUTIFUL, well-balanced, delicious white wine with fantastic acidity and mineral undertones. A serious white wine for a moderate price and an excellent choice for every day drinking.

La Spinetta Rose 2018

"Pale pink. Grapefruit aromas are dominant on the nose and in the mouth. Tart and juicy, this tastes and smells like a pink-colored Sauvignon Blanc, so this will likely find many fans, but I was left scratching my head. Finishes bright and juicy. A blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Prugnolo Gentile (the biotype of Sangiovese typical of the territory of Montepulciano)." (Ian D'Agata, Vinous)

Cafaggio Chianti Classico 2013

"Offers a rounded profile, filled with cherry, raspberry and spice flavors. This is driven as much by the vivid acidity as the refined tannins, ending with elements of fruit, spice and mineral. Drink now through 2022." Wine Spectator, Jun 2016)

Wine Spectator: 92 points

Terenzi Morellino di Scansano 2017

"Deep ruby red with scents of red fruits and violets, with spicy hints on the finish. A wine with well-balanced, soft and persistent tannins. Its freshness makes it very easy to drink." (Winery notes)
