Three New Italian Whites Impress With Quality and Finesse

This week we have three new Italian whites which we think you'll be sure to love. Each one of them is distinct, vibrant, off the radar and only made in small production. In other words, these are artisanal wines of pedigree and class. We trust you'll enjoy them as much as we have. The unusual copper-colored Pinot Grigio called Attems has become a "must have" staple in our house!

Attems Cupra Ramato Pinot Grigio 2011 (IGT)Attems Cupra Ramato Pinot Grigio 2011 (IGT)

This absolutely delicious “ramato” or copper-colored Pinot Grigio offers aromas of pink grapefruit, stone fruit and mineral. Its beautiful color is the result of longer contact with the skins of the grape during winemaking. Acacia blossom, cherry and hints of wild strawberry are quick to emerge, gradually yielding to nuances of ginseng. Tangy notes of salty mineral enliven a very seductive palate which impresses with its fine balance, followed by a long-lingering, fresh finish which concludes on a pleasant note of bitter almond. We simply adore this wine, and hands down we think you will too.

$20.99/bottle or $201.50/12 pack case ($16.79/bottle) or just $16.79/bottle in a mixed case of wine.

Elio Grasso EducatoElio Grasso Educato Chardonnay 2011 (DOC)

We've been exploring Italian Chardonnay's of late and we've been rather excited with our findings. Elio Grasso's Langhe Chardonnay from Piedmont highlights the potential for international varietals in Monforte d'Alba - at least in the hands of this exceptional Barolo producer. Grown on the loose, sandy, limestone-based soils of Garavini, it's fermented in stainless steel and finished in new French barriques for seven months. This crisp yet complex estate-grown Chardonnay was 'educato' in small barrels, in the Burgundian tradition. It's very French in style and we like that.

$21.99/bottle or $211.10/12 pack case ($17.59/bottle) or just $17.59/bottle in a mixed case of wine.

Punta Crena Punta Crena Ca Da Rena Pigato 2011 (DOC)

This delightful wine from Liguria is a genetic variation of Vermentino said to have developed in the 18th century. Pigato is a rather unusual grape variety. There are less than a handful available in MA. The Pigato from Punta Crena shows its distinctive character expressed from 37-year-old vines planted in rocky, red clay soils. Light and fresh, slightly saline and mouthwatering, this would be delightful with vegetable dishes dressed with anchovy-based bagna cauda. An old school, very cool wine from the brilliant importer Kermit Lynch.

$23.99/bottle or $230.30/12 pack case ($19.19/bottle) or just $19.19/bottle in a mixed case of wine.
