This Chardonnay Trounced Expensive
White Burgundies
Jancis Robinson, Master of Wine, is the most preeminent wine scholar in the world. If you've read any of her books then you will easily understand why she has risen to the very top of professional wine circles. She has authored seminal wine books such as "The World Atlas Of Wine," "The Oxford Companion to Wine" and our personal favorite "Wine Grapes: A Complete Guide to 1,368 Vine Varieties, Including Their Origins and Flavours."
In 2015 Jancis conducted a blind tasting comparison of top white Burgundies with her favorite New Zealand Chardonnays in an effort to explore alternatives to the most expensive white wines in the world.
Here is a fascinating excerpt from her May 30, 2015 article which was published in the Financial Times.
"Last week I was presented with proof of my theory that the white wine grape of which New Zealanders should be most proud is not Sauvignon Blanc but Chardonnay. For the last two decades, the North and South Islands have been engulfed in a tidal wave of Sauvignon Blanc. Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc may have been a huge commercial success but no one could accuse the style of subtlety, nor the wines of longevity.
However, a recent blind tasting of Kumeu River Chardonnays back to 2007 comparing them with some of their finest white burgundy equivalents suggests that, at least from this top producer outside Auckland, New Zealand Chardonnays can more than hold their own. And as for value, they won hands down, costing only a fraction of the wines they trounced.
The Kumeu River wines shone out because they were generally better made and more refined and sophisticated."
Woah. Now keep in mind, the Kumeu River Chardonnays were being blind tasted against heavyweights including Domaine Leflaive's Puligny-Montrachet and Puligny Clavoillons (£700 and £1,400 a case respectively), Domaine Comtes Lafon's Meursault (£700) and Drouhin's Puligny Pucelles (£700).

Kumeu River Village Chardonnay 2017 (Auckland, New Zealand)
"Incorporating approximately 20% Hawke's Bay fruit from a recently acquired vineyard, the 2017 Village Chardonnay is one of the strongest I can recall, despite a challenging vintage. Mainly fermented and aged in older barrels, it's medium-bodied and plump in the mouth, with notes of peach and pineapple. Creamy, soft and custardy in texture, it picks up a crisp, citrusy edge on the finish." (Wine Advocate)
$21.99/bottle or $211.10/12 pack case ($17.59/bottle) with a 20% discount.
