Stunning 95 Point Chianti Classico

Who doesn't love Chianti? It's a glorious food wine. We drink it several times a month (at least!). Today we'll explore what makes Chianti tick.

Chianti is a region in Tuscany, Italy which is famous for its Sangiovese-based red wines. Sangiovese must comprise 75-100% of the wine, but it may also contain other grapes such as Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

This gorgeous wine appellation is broken into subzones, which can be classified according to the respective aging requirements. The general entry-level Chianti appellation has six months of aging (as does Chianti Colli Senesi). Moving up the ladder, with one year's aging we find Chianti Rufina, Chianti Colli Fiorentini, Chianti Superiore and Chianti Classico (we always carry each of these wine appellations in the store).

As we approach the more narrow portion of the ladder we'll find Chianti Classico Riserva which requires two years of aging. Finally, at the very tiny tippy top there is Chianti Classico Gran Selezione which requires 2.5 years of aging.

Gran Selezione wines are typically on the expensive side. We opened one from Isole e Olena several weeks ago which sells for $250/bottle. Yes, it was definitely worth it!

Tenuta Di Arceno Strada al Sasso Chianti Classico Gran Selezione (DOCG) 2015

Strada Al Sasso is the flagship, single-vineyard, single-block Sangiovese from Tenuta Di Arceno. It's the most intense, brooding, concentrated and complex wine they produce at Tenuta di Arceno. The aromatics are saturated with dark fruit, dark-roasted coffee beans and violets. The palate is dense and commanding with dried plums, nutmeg, earth, wet slate, firm acids and fine tannins. While this wine drinks well in its youth, it's built to evolve and improve over the next decade or more.

Suggested food pairings include wild boar pappardelle, hard cheeses like Asiago and Manchego, roasted chicken and anything with Bolognese sauce
