Sensational Loire Valley Producer Arrival

J. De Villebois is a sensational wine producer in the Loire Valley of France who specializes in Sauvignon Blanc. We were anxiously awaiting the arrival of these wines into the United States after having tasted samples over a month ago. We were particularly intrigued when a high ranking portfolio manager informed us he recently visited the property and felt that their wines were some of the best in the marketplace and that's saying something because one of them is a Sancerre!

Before we launch into the wines, a little background is in order. The Loire Valley of France is the spiritual home of Sauvignon Blanc, where it is grown to much fanfare in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé (not to be confused with Pouilly-Fuissé, which is made from Chardonnay).

Sancerre is perhaps the pinnacle of Sauvignon Blanc worldwide, and as you may recall it just happens to be in limited supply this season due to devastating weather conditions accompanied by great demand. Today we have three tiers of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc on offer, starting with an entry level Val de Loire (a general appellation for the region), then a less well known but exciting middle-tiered appellation called Menetou-Salon, and finally a STUNNING Sancerre. And one little surprise too!

J. De Villebois Val de Loire Sauvignon Blanc 2018

J. de Villebois Touraine Sauvignon Blanc is a beautiful harmonious cuvée issued from multiple vineyard blocks. It's made from grapes which have slowly ripened on the argiles à silex slopes overlooking the Cher Valley. The wine expresses a unique varietal and mineral character with intense gooseberry and citrusy flavors complementing a refreshing acidity.

J. De Villebois Menetou-Salon Blanc 2017

"Located on the left bank of the Loire river, below the vineyards of Sancerre, Menetou-Salon is the smallest appellation and therefore, less known. However, it produces great wines that are rounder and richer in flavor than its neighbors Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé.

The J.de Villebois Menetou-Salon is again based on a careful selection of the vineyard blocks making it a "true to type" wine you will enjoy drinking. The Menetou-Salon has an intense nose of exotic fruit flavors, peach and wild flowers with a soft yet refreshing palate." (Winery Notes)

Now it's time for something FUN, a red Menetou-Salon!!! The two main red grapes grown in the Loire Valley are Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. Pinot Noir tends to be more elegant and refined when grown in a cool climate like the Loire Valley. This one is lovely.
