Red Burgundy Worth Every Penny
Finding value in red Burgundy is a Herculean task, and one subject to wildly variant opinion. Yes, there is most certainly lovely red Burgundy available in MA. However you will pay through the nose for it and there won't be much of it around. That's just the way it goes. Plot and parcel size is miniscule and the Pinot Noir grape is notoriously difficult and challenging to grow.
We were thrilled to discover two red Burgundies we feel represent solid value for their price, both from one of Burgundy's less well-known areas, the Côte Chalonnaise.
So let's head on over to this rarified appellation.
Clos Salomon Givry 1er Cru 2014
The known history of Clos Salomon goes back approximately 700 years when a fellow named Hugues Salomon put his Givry vineyard on the map by making it a favorite wine of the Pope of Avignon and Henry IV. That's no easy task, but this winery is really that remarkable.
This wine is proudly endowed with structure and full-throttle flavors from its gifted terroir. It's a deeply savory and high-toned floral and fruited red wine. When it comes down to it, this is a premier cru red Burgundy which would give any Burgundy in its price range a serious run for the money.
$45.99/bottle or $411.50/12 pack case ($36.79) or $36.79/bottle in a mixed case of wine. Limiteds supply available.
Domaine A. et P. de Villaine La Fortune Bourgogne Rouge 2014
Our eyes popped open when we saw the name on this wine label. Are you kidding me? Is this really a wine made by THE Aubert de Villaine?
This is one winemaker who deserves the accolades he receives. He is a reluctant hero, an unlikely trait in a man of such accomplishment, intellect, and inherent sense of noblesse. He just happens to also be heir to one of the most enviable wine legacies of all time, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
This textbook example of red Burgundy comes from a selection of Côte Chalonnaise fruit. This overachiever exhibits sweet fruit with savory elements, surprising complexity and plentiful aromas of cherry, strawberry and forest floor notes.
$38.99/bottle or $374.30/12 pack case ($31.19/bottle) or $31.19/bottle in a mixed case of wine.
'Tis the season for red Burgundy. These are worth your while. Enjoy!
