Blockbuster Italian Barbaresco Lands
Well, hello. Today we have a blockbuster wine for Italian wine lovers as well as fans of super expressive red wines.
La Ganghija Barbaresco just arrived in the store last week and we couldn't be more thrilled. We aerated and decanted La Ganghija and served it with a thick rib eye steak grilled on the Big Green Egg with olive oil and fresh herbs from the garden (at least the ones the baby rabbits didn't eat). It was oh so ah-mazing.
Located in the "Giacosa", "Bricco di Treiso" and "Giacone" areas of Piedmont, this Barbaresco was fermented in stainless steel tanks before being aged in French and Slavonian oak casks for 24 months followed by 12 months aging in bottle prior to release.
This gorgeous red wine has a complex structure with notes of wild berries, black cherries, and just a hint of licorice and vanilla spice.
La Ganghija is warm and embracing with extraordinary persistence and freshness on the finish. While this wine can easily age for 20-30 years, it's also drinking great right now when aerated and served in large glasses. It's the best of both worlds!
Our recommendation is to purchase a few cases and open one bottle every year to see how it evolves with time. The only trouble is that it's drinking beautifully right now, so good luck with that.
La Ganghija Barbaresco (DOCG) 2016
"Enzo Rapalino from Treiso triumphed with his 2015 at the Decanter World Wine Awards, and the 2016, which is aged in barriques as well as large casks, is of comparable quality. It's very ripe on the nose but without jamminess, displaying vibrant cherry and raspberry aromas. The attack is fresh and lively, and the mid-palate is concentrated with ripe tannins and acidity. It's animated and zesty, with real flair, energy and length. Should age well, but accessible young. Drinking Window 2020 - 2035." (Decanter Magazine)

$52.99/bottle or $508.70/12 pack case ($42.39/bottle). This is a serious wine for Italian wine lovers. Definitely cellar worthy, company worthy, you name it.

Raeburn Chardonnay 2017
Raeburn is an Olde English term which means the river where one goes to drink. So it's fitting that Raeburn's expressive, beautifully balanced Chardonnay begins in the heart of the Russian River Valley where some of the world's finest Chardonnay grapes are grown. Raeburn Chardonnay shows an array of complex fruit tones ranging from pear and Gravenstein apple to nectarine. The fruit is beautifully complemented with toasted oak, vanilla and hints of Crème Brûlée with a balanced and elegant finish.
Raeburn Rose 2018
"A blend of Pinot Noir, Grenache and Zinfandel, Raeburn winemaker Joe Tapparo carefully selected vineyards to source grapes for the wine. Tapparo crafted the 2018 Rosé in the Provençal style, resulting in a light salmon hue with elegant floral and raspberry aromas. The palate brings lush flavors of strawberry and guava and a bright, natural acidity." (Winery notes)
Raeburn Pinot Noir 2016
"Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2016 Pinot Noir is scented of black and red cherries, mulberries and spice cake with a waft of underbrush. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a good amount of straightforward berry flavors supported by a chewy frame and just enough freshness lifting the finish. 15,000 cases produced." Palazzo Maffei Lugana 2017
"This unoaked white wine is fermented in stainless steel for a fresh, fruit forward, off dry style with a crisp finish. Perfect with shrimp, oysters, lobster, any seafood and white meats. Lugana is known for its pleasant, easy drinking style with hints of floral, peach and citrus." (Winemaker's Notes)
Vulka Etna Bianco 2017
"A blend of Carricante (60%) and Catarratto (40%), the 2017 Etna Bianco Vulkà is a steady and fresh white wine from volcanic soils. It is tonic and crisp with lemon zest, white peach and crushed stone. There is a moment of bitter almond on the finish, and the wine is almost salty in character. Bottle production is 30,000 strong." Vulka Etna Rosso 2016
"Here is a simple, entry-level blend of Nerello Mascalese (80%) and Nerello Cappuccio (20%). The mid-weight 2017 Etna Rosso Vulkà is briefly put in oak barrels for better integration and harmony. This is not a complicated wine, but it does offer bright aromas of cherry, red currant and campfire ash (to remind you of its volcanic origins). Some 35,000 bottles were produced." (Wine Advocate)
Cottanera Barbazzale Etna Rosso 2017
"This lovely Italian red wine is 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10 % Nerello Cappuccio. Vibrant ruby red in color. Delightful scents of raspberry and blackberry, wild flowers interwoven with light mineral scents. Very pleasant freshness on the palate, with a fresh tasting hint of acid." (Winemaker's Notes)
