"An utterly irresistible, striking wine"

Great snowballs and blizzards be gone, even we're stocking up on wine today to battle the next episode of snowmaggedon.

Blustery wind and boatloads of snow are soooo last month so we're planning on having at least one white wine this weekend just to let Old Man Winter know who's boss. Pow! Pow! Pow!!!

We suggest the newest release from one of our favorite white Burgundy producers, Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin. We blasted through their entry level 2013 Chablis and there are sadly only a few bottles remaining in our cooler. The wholesaler's cupboards are bare so that one's done.

Fortunately, we replaced it with an even better bottle of wine which just so happens to be a Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons from the very same Droin family.

For those of you who aren't overly familiar with Chablis, please ditch any thoughts of time machine travel to the 1970s when "Chablis" could be found in 4 liter jugs across the Cape. Today's wine is not that.

Today's wine is more like royalty.

The Droin family has been in Chablis since at least 1547, when the first records indicate that one Jehan Droin owned one parcel of vines in the Clos. Since then, the family has always owned property in the village and is among the oldest land owners in the area. Jean-Paul Droin took over the property in 1983 and helped to establish the property as among the best of the AOC. In 1999, his son Benoit joined the property and is now the principal winemaker at the estate.

"The 2013 Chablis Vaillons is striking today. Partial vinification in oak gives the Vaillons an added level of textural breadth and raciness that works beautifully here. Yellow stone fruits and spices flesh out in an utterly irresistible, striking wine."

Of all the growers I visit in Chablis on a regular basis, Droin remains one of the least known, especially in the US. The wines, though, they speak for themselves. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous)

Vinous: 92-94 points

$31.99/bottle or $307.10/12 pack case ($25.59/bottle) or just $25.59/bottle in a mixed case of wine.
