75 Year Old Vines Produce An Equal To Châteauneuf
Today we have on offer a big, beautiful, high scoring Gigondas from the Southern Rhóne Valley in France.
In terms of the appellation hierarchy in the Southern Rhóne, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is most definitely King, while Gigondas is the eager Prince ready to inherit the throne.
Gigondas can be just as expensive as entry level Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it frequently over delivers in terms of quality for the money. The press on this wine is absolutely immense and the availability is rather limited.
The 2016 vintage in the Southern Rhóne Valley was a rare one. According to the Wine Spectator it set a new benchmark and was awarded an overall score of 99 points. The Wine Advocate awarded the vintage a score of 98 points.
The growing season was warm during the day but cool at night, with an unusually large diurnal swing that led to slow, even ripening across all varieties while maintaining acidity.
This means only one thing. You should flock to the 2016 wines from the Southern Rhóne and stock up your cellar while you can still get them.
Les Pallieres Racines Gigondas 2016
 "The 2016 Gigondas Les Racines was in its foudres at the time of my visit, but I still think it is the equal of the Brunier family's Châteauneufs. Full-bodied and rich but silky and almost lacy in texture, it marries raspberries and apricots with lovely herbal nuances and a lingering finish. It's a tremendous Gigondas, made from 75-year-old vines (80% Grenache)." (Wine Advocate)

"Highly fragrant, smoke-tinged aromas of fresh dark fruits, incense and potpourri are sharpened by a spicy pepper note. Fleshy and broad but energetic as well, offering bitter cherry, black raspberry and floral pastille flavors that turn sweeter on the back half. Finishes sweet, broad and very long, displaying firm, spicy punch and dusty tannins that come in late." (Josh Raynolds, Vinous)
