Sometimes You Just Want the Lightning Bolt To Strike

The other night we ventured down to our wine cellar with mischief in our hearts. Every time we open the door there's an undercurrent of excitement. Wines we haven't seen in ages peer up at us, inviting gorgeous food pairings and recalling spectacular memories.

This time we knew we wanted something SPECIAL. You know, the kind of wine which caresses the palate, inspires genuine revery and is capable of haunting you for years. A tall order, we realize, but sometimes you just want the lightning bolt to strike.

We like to think of this sort of wine experience as something of an epiphany. Yes, that's it. It's when drinking a wine is a truly profound, inspiring and ardent activity. Imagine a downright sexy bombshell merging with elegant, sophisticated nobility and you'd be on the right track.

And, in case you have an inner foodie, we paired today's offering with slow-braised, grass-fed short ribs and let's just say the rest was history. It was a truly beautiful and perfect moment in time.

Without further ado, it's time to fall in love again.

The STUNNING Pecchenino San Giuseppe Barolo is made from Nebbiolo cultivated on two vineyards, totaling just over three acres. You heard that right! Tiny. The yield from each vine is extremely low - only 1 kg per vine. This ultra low yield is achieved by thinning the vines in July and pruning the bottom half of the bunches in August, promoting better maturation in the remaining grapes. This painstaking process ensures only the very finest Nebbiolo makes its way to the Pecchenino winery. The resulting wine is aged in large botti, allowing tannins to round out without masking this wine's rich fruit bouquet.

Mmmmm. Just thinking about this opulent bombshell is sending us into a tailspin. Let's face it, it's going to be difficult to keep that cellar door shut.

Pecchenino San Giuseppe Barolo 2008 (DOCG)

Pecchenino San Giuseppe Barolo 2008 (DOCG) "The 2008 Barolo San Giuseppe is GORGEOUS in this vintage. Plums, black cherries, incense, menthol, tar and licorice are all woven together in this huge, dark wine.

The 2008 boasts stunning inner sweetness, great purity and fabulous overall balance.

Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins support layers of dark, textured fruit in this big, full-bodied wine. The marriage of fruit, acidity and structure is terrific. This vivid, harmonious Barolo suggests Pecchenino is quickly moving in the right direction with their Baroli. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028." (Wine Advocate)

We obviously couldn't wait until 2018 to enjoy this stunner and we're soooo glad we didn't!!!

"Though the Pecchenino family's estate is focused in Dogliani, they own several small parcels in Monforte d'Alba, including this block in San Giuseppe. This is a fruity take on Barolo, cushioned and velvety. The tannins are substantial, with a bitterness that feels like chewing on anise, while the red woodland berry flavors completely fill those tannins, creating a savory balance. The lasting impression is of fruity porcini." (Wine & Spirits Magazine)
