A Rare 95-100 Point Magnum of Chateauneuf!

Today's offering is nothing short of stunning.

We're talking about a wine which is highly restricted, virtually impossible to obtain, and it just happens to sport monster press reviews. Plus only 75 bottles were imported into the United States (that's right, bottles, not cases!). This wine really gives small production new meaning.

Alright, we know what you're thinking. How in the world did our humble little store on the Cape possibly obtain such an incredibly unusual and sought after wine? Good question! This year we found out we had the chops to become the number three account in Massachusetts for its importer, Eric Solomon's European Cellars, so we were extremely fortunate to be granted just a tiny smidge.

Let's start with the facts. First, this incredibly rare wine was only produced in magnums. Second, the winery only produced 200 bottles, 75 of which were imported into the United States. That's it for the entire world. Even Robert Parker remarked upon the desirability and rarity of this wine in his review.

In other words, this is a wine for serious wine lovers. Or those amongst you who enjoy a trophy wine every now or then. Or perhaps you have a passion for legacy wines. Some of you may even want a magnum for an amazing corporate gift for the holidays.

It might help to know our wine received a massive 95-100 point score from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Let's get to it!

"This is an other-worldly wine. An absolutely monumental effort." (Robert Parker)

"The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum is very close in quality to the 2007, displaying the beauty of Chateauneuf du Pape, the glory of these ancient vines and the outrageous quality and complexity of the Grenache grape. It exhibits amazing kirsch liqueur intermixed with lavender, spice box and roasted herbs as well as a phenomenal purity and unctuosity that lead to a voluptuous texture and a finish that goes on well past a minute.

This is an other-worldly wine. An absolutely monumental effort, it is only bottled in magnums (200 or so produced), so the number of people who will ever be able to taste it is, sadly, very limited. It should drink well or 25+ years.

Pascal and Vincent Maurel appear to have achieved great success in both 2008 and 2009 (and don't forget they produced three perfect wines in 2007). To say they are on a qualitative hot streak is the understatement of the wine world.

There is no doubt that Clos Saint-Jean has probably produced the wines of the vintage across the board in 2009. Yields were preposterously low with many of the parcels coming in at 15 hectoliters per hectare or less, which works out to about one ton of fruit per acre - financial suicide!" (Robert Parker, Wine Advocate)

Wine Advocate: 95-100 points

"This lush red shows very enticing notes of toasty raisin, spice cake, fig sauce and blackberry preserves inlaid with flashes of ganache and espresso. The dense but racy finish features a graphite edge that really extends. Grenache. Best from 2012 through 2024. 75 cases imported." (Wine Spectator)

Wine Spectator: 95 points

"A kaleidoscopic bouquet displays scents of candied red berries, incense and Asian spices, accented by an overlay of smoky minerals. Sharply focused and pure, offering sweet raspberry and cherry compote flavors and a sexy floral pastille nuance. Finishes sweet, sappy and very long, echoing the floral note. Looks to be a star of the vintage, but I'm sure it won't come cheap." (Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

International Wine Cellar: 93 points
