Bang for Your Buck Luxury Wines: The Making of Gorgeous Holiday Gifts
What better way to show you care than with the gift of wine?
Red Wine Lovers
Jaffurs Syrah 2009 (Santa Barbara County, CA)   Jaffurs Syrah 2009
While this wine remains under the radar for most, this winery is lauded by some of the most important wine reviewers in the United States. We first tasted this wine two years ago, and we thought it was positively brilliant. Jaffurs Syrah is a wonderful pairing for beef or lamb. Available for under $25/bottle, this boutique wine makes an excellent gift for any serious red wine lover.
“Easily one of the best values readers will find in California Syrah.”
"A gorgeous wine loaded with blackberries, blueberries, licorice and herbs. It shows lovely depth and roundness to match some of its more powerful tendencies. A few barrels of Petite Sirah add layers of muscle, yet this remains an exceptionally polished wine at its level, not to mention a fabulous value. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.
This is a very strong showing from Rhone specialist Craig Jaffurs. The straight Santa Barbara County is an excellent starting point, and easily one of the best values readers will find in California Syrah." (Wine Advocate)

Conn Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (Napa Valley, CA)   Conn Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
Sometimes a big Cabernet is just the right ticket. Perhaps you're looking for a corporate gift, or something really special for a holiday dinner. Or maybe you just want an extravagant gift for under the tree. Either way, if you're looking for a “near perfect” scoring Cabernet Sauvignon, this is the wine for you.
As one might imagine, limited quantities are available of this beauty. Please call to reserve or reply to this email. Orders fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis.
“As black as a moonless night. A remarkable wine.”
"One of the few wineries to make a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve that eclipsed its 2007 counterpart is Anderson’s Conn Valley. A spectacular effort that is as black as a moonless night, this full-bodied wine boasts abundant aromas of creme de cassis, camphor and subtle oak presented in a voluptuously textured, full-bodied style with terrific richness and depth. Great intensity and opulence as well as a layered mouthfeel make for a remarkable wine that should age for 20-30+ years." (Wine Advocate)

Cogno Cascina Nuovo Barolo 2006 (Piemonte, Italy)   Cogno Cascina Nuovo Barolo 2006
A good Barolo is absolute heaven, and our personal wine of choice for the holiday table. We negotiated a special deal on this small production wine with our good friends at Vias Imports, so you won't find this stunner anywhere else. With only 400 cases imported into the entire United States, this is an artisanal, boutique Italian wine at a fantastic price considering its outstanding pedigree.
“This is a first-class effort from start to finish.”
Wow, what a wonderful wine, delivering rich notes of black fruit, vanilla, cherry and spice. But the aromas are in no way obvious. In fact, this is an ethereal and elegant wine that pays attention to the little details, like the light shadings of polished stone and violets that liven up the long finish.” (Wine Enthusiast)

"Cogno’s 2006 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a truly beautiful wine at this level. Red cherries, sweet, perfumed roses, mint and baking spices are just some of the nuances that emerge from this beautiful, traditionally made Barolo. The Cascina Nuova shows wonderful density in a weightless style that only Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo are capable of. This is a first-class effort from start to finish." (Wine Advocate)

White Wine Lovers
Frog's Leap Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (Napa Valley, CA)   Frog's Leap Sauvignon Blanc 2010
For those of you who enjoy bay scallops as an appetizer course at the holidays (and who doesn't?), this is a fantastic white wine to serve with the little guys. The Napa Valley fruit is both rich and unctuous, while at the same time being balanced with nice acidity.
"A complex wine that balances fatness and freshness. It layers herbal scents with ripe fruit notes of melon, pineapple and cherimoya, cleaned up in the finish by a pink grapefruit acidity. The flavors are saturated and sophisticated, a rich white to pour with Thai chicken sausages off the grill." (Wine & Spirits Magazine)

Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay 2009 (Napa Valley, CA)   Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay 2009
This wine may easily be the candidate for Chardonnay of the year. At least if you listen to both the Wine Spectator and the Wine Enthusiast, both of whom awarded it a Top 100 Wines of the Year in the last month.
This is a wine for lovers of big, full-bodied Chardonnay. With all this crazy press, we're sorry to say there are limited quantities available.
"Shafer consistently produces one of the biggest, fruitiest Chardonnays in California, and yet the wine remains balanced and interesting. The 2009 Red Shoulder Ranch is gigantic in pineapples, pears, mangoes, tangerines and honey, yet so minerally and crisp that somehow it finishes dry." (Wine Enthusiast)

Sigalas Asirtiko Athiri 2010 (Santorini, Greece)   Sigalas Asirtiko Athiri 2010

Greek wine is an exceptionally hot topic these days. There isn't a whole lot of it to go around, but we've been huge fans for a long time. Sigalas Asirtiko is one of our very favorite white wines in the summer, but we also enjoy it year round with shellfish and fish courses.

This wine is a great gift for any white wine lover who has even the slightest hint of adventure.

“This is an elegant gem of a white.”

"Sigalas sets the bar high for Assyrtiko as usual. This 2010 is a balance of rounded citrus, crisp sea salt and sparkling minerality. Delicious with grilled fish, fruit or alone on a hot day, this is an elegant gem of a white that represents some of the best of Greek wine offered today." (Wine Enthusiast)

"Juicy and rich, with concentrated pear, apple and white fruit flavors that are backed up by plenty of fresh acidity. The intense finish features mineral notes, joined by sea salt and white pepper. Should turn creamy with time in the cellar. 7,000 cases made." (Wine Spectator)

Pazo de Señoráns Albariño 2010
Records have been found which testify Pazo de Señoráns dates back to the 16th century, and that over time, its century-old walls have been silent witnesses to all kinds of events and intrigues. Today, the property is one of the few remaining family-owned estates, and remains quite small in order to maintain a rigorous level of quality.
We love this wine. Full stop. It's one of our Top 10 White Wines of the Year.
“Drink this superb effort.”

"As usual, Pazo de Senorans has made one of the finest Albarinos of the vintage. The 2010 Albarino was aged in small stainless steel vats sur lie with batonnage for 4 months. Jasmine, mineral, lemon zest, and other citrus notes inform the nose of this multi-dimensional already complex white.
On the palate tropical flavors emerge adding to the wine's pleasure quotient. Drink this SUPERB EFFORT over the next 3-4 years." (Wine Advocate)
